A clemency petition calling for measures to protect the life of Sivarasa Anojan, a Sri Lankan citizen sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia, has been handed to Northern Province Governor N. Vethanayahan.

The petition was submitted on September 22 on behalf of the Northern and Eastern provincial unions of the National Maha Sabha.

The petition calls on the Sri Lankan government to pursue diplomatic and legal measures with the Saudi Arabian authorities to reduce or commute the death sentence imposed on Anojan.

The Northern Province Governor said he would immediately forward the petition to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and bring it to his attention.
