Measures are to be taken to bring the construction of borewells in the Jaffna Peninsula under a proper regulatory framework, with the aim of protecting groundwater resources.

At a discussion held on September 22 under the leadership of Northern Province Governor N. Vethanayahan, participants examined the potential damage to groundwater resources from borewells constructed without proper oversight.

It was decided to strengthen the permit procedures for constructing borewells and to request that the Minister of Environment make the necessary amendments to the existing gazette notification.

The main aim of this measure is to protect the groundwater resources that support drinking-water needs and agricultural livelihoods in the Jaffna Peninsula.
