New generations of people with Sri Lankan Tamil roots, living in countries around the world, are making their mark in many fields. Sport is one of the arenas in which athletes with these roots are securing important places.

In the first instalment of “Eelam Tamil Footprints in World Sport”, we introduce Nishan Velupillay, who has represented Australia's national football team, the Socceroos, and reached the FIFA World Cup.

A Football Journey That Began in Melbourne

Nishan Velupillay was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia.

He became involved in football as a child, beginning his journey through local youth teams. He later entered Melbourne Victory's youth system and continued to develop his talent.

After joining the Melbourne Victory Academy in 2019, Nishan progressed through NPL Victoria and made his senior A-League debut for Victory against Sydney FC in May 2021.

He gradually established himself as one of Melbourne Victory's important players.

Between 2021 and 2026, he made 141 appearances across all competitions for Melbourne Victory and scored 25 goals.

He won the Australia Cup with Victory and received the club's Young Player of the Year award. He was also part of the Victory squads that reached consecutive A-League Grand Finals in 2024 and 2025.

The 2024–25 season was one of the strongest of his club career. With 12 goals and nine assists across all competitions, he finished as Melbourne Victory's leading goalscorer for the season.

Sri Lankan Tamil Roots Through His Father

Nishan's father, Sasinath Velupillay, is Malaysian with Sri Lankan Tamil ancestry. His mother, Gillian Velupillay, comes from an Anglo-Indian family background.

His family history therefore connects him to Sri Lankan Tamil roots through his father.

Australian media have also documented his Tamil heritage. During the 2026 World Cup period, SBS Tamil introduced him as an Australian footballer with Tamil roots and published an excerpt from his interview discussing his Tamil identity.

A New Chapter with Australia's National Team

Nishan's performances for Melbourne Victory opened the door to Australia's national team.

After representing Australia at under-23 level, he received his first call-up to the senior national team in October 2024.

On October 10, 2024, he came on as a substitute against China in a FIFA World Cup qualifier in Adelaide and scored on his international debut.

Introduced in the 83rd minute, he scored Australia's third goal in stoppage time. Australia won the match 3–1.

Scoring in his first senior international was an important turning point in his football career.

He followed that debut with goals against Indonesia and China in World Cup qualifiers in March 2025.

Having earned a place in Australia's attacking line-up in a short period, Nishan also secured selection for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nishan on the FIFA World Cup Stage

Nishan Velupillay was named in Australia's final 26-player squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico.

He wore the number 23 shirt.

On June 13, 2026, he made his World Cup debut in Australia's opening group match against Türkiye at BC Place in Vancouver, Canada.

With Australia leading 1–0, Nishan replaced Nestory Irankunda in the 61st minute.

Australia went on to win 2–0.

He then started Australia's group match against the United States in Seattle.

His two appearances at the 2026 World Cup marked a remarkable progression from Melbourne Victory's youth teams to football's biggest international tournament.

Australia also advanced beyond the group stage to the Round of 32.

The Next Journey: European Football

Just weeks after the World Cup ended, Nishan's professional career took another important turn.

On August 19, 2026, he transferred from Melbourne Victory to Germany's FC Ingolstadt 04.

It was his first move to an overseas professional club.

FC Ingolstadt 04 competes in Germany's 3. Liga.

After seven years with Melbourne Victory, Nishan took on a new challenge in European football and soon began making his mark in Germany.

On September 16, 2026, he scored for Ingolstadt in the 32nd minute against TSG Hoffenheim II.

Although Ingolstadt lost the match 2–1, Nishan had also found the net in German football.

Sri Lankan Tamil Sporting Footprints Across the World

Nishan Velupillay's football journey began in Melbourne's youth game, progressed through Melbourne Victory and the Australian national team, reached the FIFA World Cup, and has now continued into European professional football.

His family roots also connect that journey to Sri Lankan Tamil history.

Successive generations of Tamil families with origins in Sri Lanka are growing up in countries across the world and earning places in those countries' national teams and leading clubs.

Their achievements deserve to be recorded both as individual successes and as part of the contemporary history of the Sri Lankan Tamil community around the world.

With that purpose, “Eelam Tamil Footprints in World Sport” will continue to introduce people of Sri Lankan Tamil ancestry who have made their mark in football, cricket, athletics and other sports across many countries.
