U.S. Import Bans on Certain Canadian Alcohol, Whey Products and Large Motorcycles Begin September 29

Ottawa / Washington — September 28, 2026

The United States is set to exclude certain Canadian alcoholic beverages, whey-related products and large-engine motorcycles from importation beginning at 12:01 a.m. Eastern time on Tuesday, September 29.

President Donald Trump ordered the restrictions in separate proclamations dated September 8. They were announced amid the continuing U.S.–Canada trade dispute after Canada imposed retaliatory duties on American goods.

The alcohol restriction applies to products of Canada listed in the proclamation’s annex. These include specified categories of whisky, wine, beer, vodka, rum and other beverages. It should not be read as a blanket ban on every Canadian alcoholic drink.

The dairy-related measure covers specified whey and whey-protein products. The list also includes molasses and non-alcoholic beer, which are not dairy products.

The motor-vehicle measure targets Canadian motorcycles and related cycles, including certain mopeds, classified with reciprocating internal-combustion engines exceeding 800 cubic centimetres. It does not cover every motorcycle made in Canada.

Trade discussions and retaliatory measures remain part of the wider dispute. As of September 28, no new announcement has withdrawn these scheduled import restrictions.
