Kyiv — September 28, 2026

Russian drone and aerial attacks across Kyiv, Kharkiv and other parts of Ukraine on September 27–28 killed and injured civilians, according to Ukrainian authorities. Casualty and damage figures are being updated as rescue work continues.

A drone directly struck a building belonging to Ukraine’s National Academy of Sciences in central Kyiv on September 28, the academy said. A fire broke out, and emergency crews began rescue operations. City authorities reported that a woman was killed and several people were injured.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said other buildings and gas stations in Kyiv were also hit that day. On the previous day, officials reported damage to homes, a warehouse and a production facility in and around the capital.

In Kharkiv, a guided aerial bomb struck an apartment building early on September 28, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said. Initial reports put the number injured at at least 22, including children. Two floors of the building were badly damaged.

Zelenskyy also reported a strike on a business centre in Dnipro, where emergency services were assessing the damage and casualties. The specific fatality and injury figures provided for that incident could not be independently verified.

On September 27, an attack that damaged a children’s centre in Sumy killed three people, an interior ministry official said. Authorities reported one death and damage to homes, a shop, hotel, medical building and grain warehouse in the Odesa region. Zelenskyy reported three deaths in the Zaporizhzhia region.

Zelenskyy said on September 27 that Russia had launched more than 2,200 attack drones, 1,630 aerial bombs and 38 missiles over the preceding week. These are Ukrainian figures and have not been independently verified.

Ukrainian defence officials say faster jet-powered drones pose a growing challenge to air defences. Russia’s defence ministry says its strikes target communications and data facilities that serve Ukraine’s military. Ukrainian officials say civilian sites have also been hit. Both countries deny deliberately targeting civilians.

The war has continued since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Negotiations have yet to produce a lasting ceasefire, while both sides continue long-range strikes.
