Peradeniya–Gampola Train Services Resume After 11 Months
Train services between Peradeniya and Gampola on Sri Lanka's upcountry railway line resumed today, October 2, 2026, after an interruption of approximately 11 months caused by severe damage from Cyclone Ditwah.

Sri Lanka Railways Media Spokesperson Asanka Samarasinghe said the cyclone and associated natural disasters had damaged 103 locations along the railway track between Rambukkana and Gampola. Services between Peradeniya and Gampola resumed after repairs to the damaged sections were completed and the track was restored to safe operating conditions.
Damage across several sections of the upcountry railway line had prevented services from operating fully for many months. Different sections have been reopening gradually as restoration work is completed. Train services between Nanu Oya and Badulla had also resumed in June.
Today's reopening of the Peradeniya–Gampola section marks another important stage in efforts to restore the upcountry railway line to normal operations.
However, services have not yet returned fully to normal across every section of the line. Repairs and work to restore services continue in the remaining areas.
As rail transport disrupted by Cyclone Ditwah is restored in stages, the resumption of the Peradeniya–Gampola service represents an important improvement for upcountry passengers and communities that depend on rail travel.
