27 October 2026 | Ontario, Canada
Three candidates with Tamil backgrounds—Parthi Kandavel, Neethan Shan and Ranjith Paranivasagam—have won seats in Ontario's municipal elections held on 26 October 2026, according to the election-night results confirmed so far.
Parthi Kandavel was re-elected as the Toronto city councillor for Ward 20, Scarborough Southwest, receiving 12,231 votes, or 35.99 per cent of the votes cast in that race.
Neethan Shan was re-elected to Toronto City Council in Ward 25, Scarborough–Rouge Park, with 15,727 votes, representing 44.8 per cent of the vote.
Ranjith Paranivasagam won the Regional Councillor position for Ward 2 in the Town of Ajax, within Durham Region, receiving 2,793 votes, or 24.3 per cent. The position involves representing residents on both Ajax Town Council and Durham Regional Council.
In the same election, Patrick Brown secured a third term as Mayor of Brampton. Brown received 65,893 votes, or 54.90 per cent of the mayoral vote.
Brown has publicly supported the development of a Tamil genocide memorial in Brampton. In testimony before a Canadian parliamentary committee in December 2024, he said that the city's memorial initiative had faced opposition and interference from representatives of Sri Lanka's High Commission. He raised concerns about foreign interference directed at diaspora communities in Canada.
Eelam Mannin Suvadugal previously published an overview of 22 municipal and school-board candidates identified as Tamil or potentially having a Tamil background in Ontario's 2026 elections.
The victories of the three candidates named above have now been verified. The election results and background details of the remaining candidates are being checked. Any additional confirmed victories will be reflected in an updated report.
Note: These figures are election-night results available as of 27 October 2026. They remain unofficial until certified by the relevant municipal election authorities.
